Alarm call
This morning I woke up slightly annoyed at around 6.30, by what I initially thought was a car alarm. But then it was slightly changing tune, must be either a very odd car alarm or... a bird!
"Calling of the Superb Lyrebird, thought by many to be our most accomplished vocalist, peaks in early winter. It is a wonderful mimic and its territorial call varies greatly with geographical region."
Listen here.
Grrr... "wonderful" was not quite what I called it this morning. But yeah, it sounded a lot like that! Turns out that Lyrebird is quite something. See this short (but famous!) clip of David Attenborough about the Lyrebird. The Ozzies are quite proud of the bird - it also features on the Australian 10 cent coin, and the 100 dollar note.
[EDIT: some knowledgable people told me it couldn't possibly have a been a Lyrebird. shame. :) Now I'm hunting for the true culprit!]
Here are some more samples of bird calls, which I am surrounded by all the time. The first one is another bird the Ozzies love to use in touristy places - The Kookaburra.
